Prof. em. Dr. Peter Opitz


Peter Opitz (* 1957) is a Swiss Reformed theologian.
After studying theology and philosophy in Bern, Tübingen and Zurich, he completed his doctorate with a thesis on the theology of John Calvin. After several years as a pastor, he habilitated at the University of Zurich with a thesis on the theology of Heinrich Bullinger. From 2009 until his retirement in 2022, he was Professor of Church History and History of Christian Doctrine from the Reformation to the Present at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Zurich and Director of the Institute for Swiss Reformation History.
He was/ is (Co-)Editor of the Works of Huldrych Zwingli, Heinrich Bullinger, John Calvin and (together with Andreas Mühling) the Reformierte Bekenntnisschriften.
He is also Board member of the International Congress on Calvin research, of the Internationale Karl Barth-Tagung and President of the Zwingliverein.
His main areas of research are
  • Theology and history of the "Reformed" Reformation
  • Ulrich Zwingli, Heinrich Bullinger, John Calvin
  • Church history of Switzerland since the Reformation, especially the 18th and 19th Century
  • Karl Barth's theology and its context

Peter Opitz (* 1957) ist ein Schweizer evangelisch-reformierter Theologe.
Nach dem Studium der  Theologie und der Philosophie in Bern, Tübingen und Zürich promovierte er mit einer Arbeit über die Theologie Johannes Calvins. Nach einigen Jahren im Pfarramt habilitierte er sich an der Universität Zürich mit einer Arbeit über die Theologie Heinrich Bullingers. Von 2009 bis zu seiner  Emeritierung 2022 war er Professor für Kirchen- und Dogmengeschichte von der Reformationszeit bis zur Gegenwart an der Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Zürich und Leiter des Instituts für Schweizerische Reformationsgeschichte.
Er war/ist (Mit-)Herausgeber der Werke Huldrych Zwinglis, Heinrich Bullingers und Johannes Calvins, und (mit Andreas Mühling) der Reformierten Bekenntnisschriften.
Er ist Board member of the International Congress on Calvin research, der Internationalen Karl Barth-Tagung und Präsident des Zwinglivereins.
